Ovary on Ultrasound

Ovaries are the production house of female body where the eggs are produced.

The Ultrasound appearance of the ovary is an ovoid shaped structure with homogenous echotexture and a central echogenic Medulla. We usually measure the size of the ovary in 3 dimensions and calculate volume on ultrasound by 0.523*length*width*depth. There are two ovaries- Right and Left. Typically the two ovaries alternately release Egg and usually one Egg is released per month. If the Egg is not fertilized, then the egg becomes atretic after 24 hours. The Corpus luteum also eventually die and level of progesterone hormone drops, the uterus lining sheds and the period begins after 14 days of ovulation.

Beginning of The Puberty
From birth, the ovaries of the human female contain a number of immature primordial follicles. At the puberty the follicles begins folliculogenesis entering a growth pattern that ends in ovulation or atresia. Folliculogenesis When the follicles changes into antral follicle stage they become dependent on hormone particularly FSH. We always check FSH and LH hormone in the serum on day 2/day 3 of menstrual cycle. The serum FSH levels should ideally be less than 9 mIU/ml.

Biological Clock
Researchers at the University of Edinburgh determined that by the time women are 30 years old, only 10% of their non growing follicles remain.
The importance of biological clock for female is based on this fact only.
