Hypothyroidism And Infertility
Hypothyroidism occurs when the thyroid does not produce enough thyroid hormones. When these hormones are low, it can affect fertility. Ovulation can be adversely impacted if the hormone levels interfere with the release of an egg. There may also be underlying causes that are contributing to infertility as well.
In women, it is important to check the levels of thyroid hormones and correct them if infertility is a problem. Usually when the hypothyroidism is brought under control, fertility can be restored. If the thyroid issue is treated and fertility is still an issue, other conditions impacting fertility are at work.
SYMPTOMS OF HYPOTHYROIDISM
If you experience a longer or shorter menstrual cycle or have heavier or lighter bleeding than normal, you may have a thyroid hormone imbalance. A longer or shorter window for bleeding than you usually have is another sign. Other common symptoms include:
- Dry skin and hair
- Fatigue
- Frequent and heavy menstrual cycles
- Forgetfulness
